FOLLOWING
the high incidence of gingivitis, a mild gum disease, in the country, a dental
expert, Dr Phil Ower has warned individuals ignoring the disease, saying it can
cause health problems beyond the mouth.
According to
the expert, gum disease can begin with plaque, which is always forming on the
teeth.
Dr Ower
stated: “Oral hygiene is an important aspect of controlling all forms of gum
diseases. Gum diseases should not be ignored. For instance, gingivitis is a
common form of gum disease. It is totally preventable because it is caused by
germs.
The expert,
who remarked that gingivitis, in some patients could be the first stage of
periodontitis, a severe form of gum disease, said that individuals needed to
physically clean their teeth using toothbrushes and flossing to remove plagues,
where germs that causes gum disease thrive.
However, the
expert declared that the use of mouthwashes alone could not thoroughly clean
the mouth, but that teeth needed to be brushed and flossed daily.
He added
that maintaining good oral hygiene was very important, especially in
individuals with diseases such as diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis.
Dr Ower
said: “If you have diabetes, gum disease can make it worse. Also, there is a
correlation between gum diseases that are not treated and heart disease and low
birth weight babies.”
Chairman, Local Organising Committee of the course, Dr Elizabeth Dosumu while describing periodontology as the bedrock of dentistry because it treats supportive structures of the teeth, lamented that gum diseases affects over 90 per cent of all age groups.
